The Western Classic. Alpaca Wool. Handmade in Ecuador.
The western poncho, done properly: hand-woven alpaca wool, a generous cut and the iconic stepped pattern in brown.
Inspired by the poncho worn in the classic 1960s spaghetti westerns, this is our best-known design: a wide, fringed serape with the geometric stepped motif, woven by hand in Otavalo, Ecuador. It has been the Ecualama hero for years because it works everywhere — over a jacket on a cold morning, at a country concert, on the ranch or the porch, and yes, as the most comfortable costume you will ever own.
Why you’ll love it
Soft against the skin – the smooth, non-scratchy feel alpaca is known for
The film poncho – wide western serape cut with hand-tied fringe
Layers over anything – generous drape that fits over a jacket
Hand-woven in Otavalo – fair-trade artisan work from Ecuador
At your door fast – FedEx Express to the US, duties covered
Details
Material: 80% baby alpaca / 20% acrylic — the acrylic keeps the piece soft, washable and in shape for years
Size: 58" x 35.5" (147 x 90 cm) including fringe — one size
Weight: approx. 850 g / 1.9 lb
Style: Western serape with hand-tied fringe, brown ground with cream stepped pattern, available with or without hood
Made in: Otavalo, Ecuador — fair trade, artisan woven
“Baby alpaca” is the name of the finest grade of alpaca fibre, not the age of the animal — alpacas are shorn once a year, like sheep.
Warmth
Mid-weight (about 1.9 lb). Light enough to wear indoors, warm enough for a cold evening outside.
Size & fit — one size
A poncho has no sleeves or seams to fit, so one size fits almost every adult; your size mainly changes how much of you it covers.
One of our widest ponchos. Generous arm coverage on any frame, including 3XL and up.
If you're 5'4": hem at the knee, arms covered to the wrist.
If you're 6'2": hem at mid-thigh, arms covered to mid-forearm.
Hand wash cold with a mild detergent (or delicate cycle in a mesh bag)
Do not bleach or tumble dry
Lay flat or hang with support to dry, out of direct sun
Steam or low iron with a cloth if needed
Handmade, so no two are identical. Each piece is woven and dyed by hand in Otavalo, Ecuador. Colours can be a shade lighter or darker than on screen, and fringe and pattern placement vary slightly — that is the signature of a real artisan piece, not a flaw.
